Hayley Atwell won't be joining Chris Evans in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Shortly after CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER hit theaters, the filmmakers started speculating about where the sequel would take the spangly superhero. Writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus began working on the sequel, now called CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, almost immediately and even mentioned that the sequel would feature flashbacks. That led many of us to assume that most of the surviving cast members from the original would reprise their roles in some form or fashion in the sequel. At the very least, it would make sense for Hayley Atwell to reprise her role as Peggy Carter since she was the love interest for Steve Rodgers, but it seems we were wrong for assuming that.
She told Timeout that she wouldn’t be returning for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER since the movie takes place in modern day. I wouldn’t completely rule out a cameo or two, but she seems pretty sure she won’t be involved. As it is, we still don’t have a female lead for the sequel that’s due to hit theaters on April 4th, 2012. We do know, however, that Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Sebastian Stan will be reprising their roles from THE AVENGERS and THE FIRST AVENGER and newcomer Anthony Mackie will also be appearing in the Anthony and Joe Russo directed film.
