Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman looking to join Akira

Director Jaume Collet-Serra and the filmmakers behind the live action AKIRA film don’t even have a lead actor nailed down yet (although Garrett Heldund is reportedly the frontrunner), but that’s not going to stop them from filling in the supporting cast. First up on the sure to be long cast list is Gary Oldman, who is wanted to play The Colonel while the always zany Helena Bonham Carter is wanted to play Lady Miyako. Neither actor is a stranger to big budget franchises as Oldman is wrapping up THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and both of them of course have starred in the Harry Potter films.
Oldman and Carter are two of the more respected actors in Hollywood and their involvement definitely gives some credibility to a very questionable project. However, if I were either of them, I’d wait to see who they get to take the two male leads. The success of the film is going to rest heavily on how much we like them, so Oldman and Carter should be weary to sign on the dotted line. Filming is set to begin in the spring.
