Henry Cavill's Immortals edges Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill at the weekend box office

For a lot of us, IMMORTALS was a dry run for Henry Cavill to see how he’ll do donning the cape in the Superman reboot, MAN OF STEEL. Although $32 million isn’t going to shatter any records, these days a $30+ million opening isn’t too shabby. This weekend, it was enough to take the top spot from Adam Sandler’s embarrassingly bad JACK AND JILL, which didn’t quite crack the $30 million mark. The other new movie of the weekend was the Clint Eastwood directed and Leonardo DiCaprio starring J. EDGAR, which has gotten some mixed reviews. It didn’t open on nearly as many screens as IMMORTALS or JACK AND JILL, but it came in fourth place. It’s the first “Oscar” movie of the season, but here’s hoping future awards hopefuls will fare better.
Next week sees the release of a little movie called THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 1, which will easily take the top spot. There’s also HAPPY FEET 2, which looks just as bad as the first one. So we can all start guessing as to how many records Breaking Dawn will set next week and how much cash it will haul in. Note: numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Immortals $32m
2. Jack and Jill $27.5m
3. Puss in Boots $27
4. Tower Heist $14
5. J. Edgar $12m
6. A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas $6m
7. In Time $4.2m
8. Paranormal Activity 3 $3.8m
9. Footloose $3m
10. Reel Steel $2m
