High School Musical director Kenny Ortega will reboot Dirty Dancing

As if having a remake of FOOTLOOSE on the way wasn’t bad enough, it appears that Lionsgate is moving ahead with a reboot of the 1987 classic DIRTY DANCING. The film will be helmed by Kenny Ortega (HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL) who was actually the original film’s choreographer, which is cool but still doesn’t give him the right to mess with the film. Here’s what Lionsgate said about the upcoming reboot, “The new film is a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills, and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.” Barf, this news literally makes me sick to my stomach.

I’m so sad that all the originality has walked out of Hollywood. It’s terrible that the studios aren’t listening to the masses and realizing that we don’t want remakes, prequels or any other rip-offs of our favorite childhood films. How many box office bombs do they need before they understand? Maybe the inevitable train wreck that will be FOOTLOOSE will show them what they’re doing.
