Hop, Arthur, Hanna and Soul Surfer top the box office while Your Highness disappoints

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

As was correctly predicted last week, HOP managed to hold on to the top spot at the box office for two weekends in a row and wasn’t really even challenged by the three new movies that opened this weekend.  ARTHUR, which featured Russell Brand as well, managed to claim the second spot, narrowly slipping by HANNA.  I enjoyed HANNA and was glad to see it overperform by taking in nearly $13 million.  How great would it be to see Saoirse Ronan in more action roles?  The flop of the weekend belongs to the pathetic looking YOUR HIGHNESS.  I enjoy slapstick comedy as much as the next person, but it didn’t look like they were trying with this.  Poor Natalie Portman; looks like her great year is over.  But the biggest surprise is with the small release SOUL SURFER, which managed a fourth place finish.  People love their inspirational movies.

Next week, the box office should belong to RIO, but SCREAM 4 might make a decent run at #1.  I’m not sure the SCREAM franchise has any legs left, but I do know that a decent looking kids movie will bring in the money, so RIO should do fine.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.  Given how close the top 7 are, there could be changes as the final Sunday numbers come in.

1. Hop $21.6m

2. Arthur $12.6m

3. Hanna $12.3m

4. Soul Surfer $10.6m

5. Insidious $10m

6. Your Highness $9.6m

7. Source Code $9m

8. Limitless $5.5m

9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 $4.5m

10. The Lincoln Lawyer $4.5m
