Inception is tops again at the box office, Twilight: Eclipse out of the top ten

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

With very little competition at the box office this weekend, it’s no surprise that the great INCEPTION would hold tight at #1 for the third straight week.  The film’s biggest competition came from DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS, which actually beat INCEPTION on Friday’s totals, but lost ground the rest of the weekend.  The other new releases this weekend didn’t fare so well with CHARLIE ST. CLOUD opening in a very weak 6th spot while CATS AND DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE fared slightly better by opening in 5th.  Neither of those openings surprise me since St. Cloud looks horribly depressing and Cats and Dogs looks plain silly.

Next week is the calm before the storm with the funny-looking comedy THE OTHER GUYS opening before the big August 13th weekend, where THE EXPENDABLES, SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD and EAT, PRAY, LOVE all open up.  Chances are good THE OTHER GUYS will take the top spot, but I suspect INCEPTION will hang in the top five for a few more weeks now.
