J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan replace Michael Arndt as writers of Star Wars: Episode VII

Star Wars 1.2 billion

Ruh Roh.  When Michael Arndt (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) was announced as the screenwriter for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, fans seemed pleased.  Arndt is not only a talented writer, but his love of the Star Wars universe is well documented.  But today it was announced that Arndt has been relieved of his writing duties and replaced by director J.J. Abrams and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK writer Lawrence Kasdan.  Kasdan’s involvement suggests a throwback to the original trilogy, but replacing the head writer this late in the game doesn’t bode well for the film.  That summer 2015 release date is barreling down on Disney and with a change in writers and zero casting announcements, the folks over at Disney and Lucasfilm have to be feeling a little nervous right now.

Kathleen Kennedy released the following statement:  “I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script.  There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen…Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production.”

Of course, this could mean very little.  Maybe Michael Arndt turned in his draft and then wasn’t open to changing anything, so Abrams decided to do it himself.  Or, maybe this means everything and the draft Arndt turned in was horrible and he and Abrams clashed.  Who knows?  It’s all speculation at this point, but if there’s one movie in the Disney universe they desperately need to get right, it’s STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.  Star Wars fans are loyal to a fault, but we can only take so much.
