Jake Gyllenhaal eyeing role in The Way, Way Back

A project called THE WAY, WAY BACK, from writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (THE DESCENDANTS), has been swimming around Tinseltown for over four years and may finally be coming to the surface. After suffering a delay from the 2007 WGA strike and a handoff from Fox Searchlight to Mandate Pictures, the drama seems to be back on the move towards production with Jake Gyllenhaal potentially attached to star in the lead. The story follows a teenage boy who finds the courage to stand up to his abusive stepfather after a summer friendship. The film will be directed by writers Faxon and Rash, but there is no word on when production will begin or who will eventually star in the film.
I have a hard time imagining what role Gyllenhaal will play in this film even though he’s supposed to be the leading actor. He’s obviously too old for the teenager role and I don’t think he would take on the part of the abusive stepfather (bad for his image I would think). Maybe he’ll be the guy the teenager befriends over the summer? I suppose once the film is officially in production we’ll get more information. Until then I’ll leave you with this adorable picture below – isn’t that dog a cutie!
