James Cameron reveals release dates for Avatar sequels

James Cameron has finally announced his (subject to change) schedule for the upcoming sequels to his 2009 hit AVATAR. He says:

I am in the process of writing the next two AVATAR films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan.

No surprise that the films are being shot back-to-back as that seems to be the trend with sequels these days, but I wouldn’t really get your hopes up for those dates. Cameron pushed back the first AVATAR and since he is such a perfectionist, he’ll have no problem pushing the sequels back if he doesn’t think they are absolutely perfect. Although I’m not on board with sequels, I am happy with these because of this statement from Cameron:

Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the AVATAR world. I didn’t want to make more AVATAR movies without a grander plan in place.

I’m all for anyone who wants to protect the planet, so I’ll watch these two sequels whether I want to or not.
