James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel in the first look at Danny Boyle's Trance
After winning the Oscar in 2008 for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, Danny Boyle came back strong in 2010 with the equally inspirational 127 HOURS. He then went on to direct the opening ceremonies for the London Olympics, but we haven’t seen a movie of his for a few years. Thankfully, that’s going to change in 2013, as we’ll finally get to see TRANCE, starring James McAvoy. Up until now, the film was more famous for the casting carousel it has gone through, starting with James McAvoy replacing Michael Fassbender and then Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel replacing Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.
The film is about an art auctioneer (James McAvoy) that teams up with a mob boss (Vincent Cassel) to steal a painting and then double crosses the mob. When the boss goes after him, he gets knocked unconscious and then claims to have no memory of the location of the painting. They then bring in a hypnotist (Rosario Dawson) to dive into his mind to locate the painting. While speaking with USA Today, Danny Boyle said: “It begins like that. But it takes the idea of a stolen painting and develops into something sleeker and more psychological, with twists and turns… I wanted to do an updated noir, give it a contemporary spin in terms of emotion. Noir is usually cold. I wanted it to be more emotionally charged. It’s the first time I put a woman at the heart of a movie.” It sounds interesting enough, and with James McAvoy in the lead role, this will definitely be one to look for in 2013.
