Jamie Foxx to play Daddy Warbucks in Annie
Recently, news broke that Quvenzhané Wallis (the cute little Oscar nominated girl from BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD) would star as the title character in the new ANNIE remake. Now, it looks as though Jamie Foxx is close to securing the role as Daddy Warbucks, renamed Benjamim Stacks. I guess Daddy Warbucks isn’t a modern enough name to implicate the character as being ridiculously wealthy.
I think Jamie Foxx should make a great
Warbucks Stacks and seems to be gathering a lot of roles lately. After staring in my personal favorite film from last year, Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED, Foxx can be seen with Channing Tatum in WHITE HOUSE DOWN June 28th. Foxx will also be playing the villain Electro in THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 next summer. Quvenzhané Wallis is an amazing young actress even picking up a best actress Oscar nomination last year, so she seems to be a relative easy choice to play the lead character.
ANNIE has already had two musical film adaptations, in 1982 starring Albert Finney and Carol Burnett and a made for TV movie in 1999. Based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the story follows a young orphan trying to find her real parents as she is stuck in an orphanage ran by the cruel Miss Hannigan. However, when Annie gets to live with the billionaire Benjamin Stacks (that might be tough to get use to) for a short time, she is able to win the hearts of everyone. Of course this all happens with a bunch of singing and dancing as well. James Lassiter, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay Z will produce the film. If you remember Jay Z has already sampled the popular “It’s A Hard Knock Life” from the musical, so clearly he’s a fan. Will Gluck (EASY A) will direct the film set to come out Christmas Day 2014.
