Janet Jackson and Thandie Newton in Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls trailer

I’m a little out of touch when it comes to Tyler Perry.  I’ve seen some of his movies and even though I don’t like all of them, I understand why people like him, but what I don’t understand is why there’s so much controversy surrounding him.  It seems that some people think he breaks down racial stereotypes and others believe he furthers them.  But whatever people’s opinion is of the producer/director/writer/actor, those opinions are going to be stretched when his latest controversy FOR COLORED GIRLS hits theaters.  Much like last year’s PRECIOUS, this film is one in which he sought help from Oprah, who had a hand in crafting the script.

The film is about seven women that have suffered a variety of challenges and are struggling with life.  It’s based off the novel ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’ by Ntozake Shange and stars Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad and Kimberly Elise.  Tyler Perry produced, wrote the script and is directing.  It hits theaters November 5th.  Watch the trailer here.
