Jay-Z set to score The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan

When I first learned of the rumor that Jay-Z was going to be scoring the music for Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY, I was a little shocked.  But then I sat and thought about it and realized that it’s not such a stretch for a famous musician to cross over into composing scores for movies.  Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) scored SPUN, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) composed THE SOCIAL NETWORK, Eddie Vedder (PEARL JAM) did INTO THE WILD and even Paul McCartney did THE FAMILY WAY back in the late 60’s.  Although it’s true none of the examples are rap stars, I see no reason why Jay-Z can’t handle THE GREAT GATSBY.  If anything, I’d say his beats are better than his lyrics, so it should be a fun score.  The news came from the UK artist The Bullitts, who posted on his Twitter account: “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”

Like I alluded to, this was a rumor back when the first trailer popped up that featured a Jay-Z song, but this is as close as we have to official confirmation.  Directed by Baz Luhrmann, THE GREAT GATSBY stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire and Adelaide Clemens. The film opens in 2D and 3D on May 10, 2013.  So what do you think?  Can Jay-Z step up to the challenge and score THE GREAT GATSBY?
