Jeremy Renner may have beaten out Alex Pettyfer and Kellan Lutz for the lead in The Bourne Legacy

Virtually every actor under the age of 30 has been somehow connected to the upcoming BOURNE LEGACY and the general feeling was that since Universal couldn’t convince Matt Damon to return to the franchise, they were going to go with a prequel of sorts and hire a younger actor to fill the vacancy left by Damon. Alex Pettyfer, Kellan Lutz, Garret Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Luke Evans and several others had been mentioned, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case as now reports are leaking out that director Tony Gilroy is going to offer the lead role to Jeremy Renner. He wouldn’t be playing Jason Bourne, as Universal doesn’t want to close the door on Damon, but Renner would be playing another agent wronged by the Treadstone Operation.
I don’t want to jump on a big soapbox here, but I think Hollywood is going to be disappointed with Jeremy Renner’s star power. I know he was good in THE HURT LOCKER and he did well with his small part in THE TOWN, but I don’t see him as a leading man in either an action or romantic capacity. He just doesn’t have that “it” quality that leading male actors possess. He’ll do well with dramas and indie films, but personally, I think he’s the wrong choice to take over the Bourne franchise. It’s a bit cliche, but they should go younger for the role so it doesn’t sound like they’re trying to mimic Damon’s character.
