Johnny Depp looking to produce and star in biopic about Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel)

So what is it with Johnny Depp and writers? To my count, the actor has played a writer 5 times in his career; FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, FINDING NEVERLAND, SECRET WINDOW, THE LIBERTINE and the upcoming RUM DIARY. Am I missing a movie? Assuming not, if Depp ends up playing Dr. Seuss (also known by his real name, Theodor Geisel), that would mark the sixth time Depp has played an author/poet on the big screen. Depp and his production company Infinitum Nihil have signed on to bring the highly revered author’s life to the big screen and Depp is currently considering starring in the film.
For those that only know the ‘Cat in the Hat’ side to Geisel, the man had an extraordinary life even though he didn’t have a rock star lifestyle. His writing influenced children’s books for generations and even when he wasn’t writing children’s stories, he drew cartoons during WWII and continued to draw for the army afterwards. The low point in his life came when his wife committed suicide, presumably after she found out about an affair he was having.
But this is a great chance for Johnny Depp to dig into a role and really run with it. I feel he’s taken some easy, quick money roles lately and would love to see him get back to acting.
