Johnny Depp, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray join Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel
Johnny Depp and director Wes Anderson just seem like a match made in heaven. Johnny Depp has proven that he’s great playing weird, quirky characters and Wes Anderson has made a living out of writing and directing weird, quirky movies, so it seems obvious the two would eventually team up together. This match should be beneficial to both Johnny Depp and Wes Anderson as Anderson has never found the box office success he so deserves (although MOONRISE KINGDOM is coming close) and Depp needs a hit that has nothing to do with Pirates or Tim Burton. I’ve always found it strange that America loves Johnny Depp as long as he’s playing a character that’s extremely different from himself. It just seems like the more “normal” his characters are, the less we seem to like him. I’m sure “normal” won’t be a problem for Wes Anderson and the only real question is going to be how far he’ll let Johnny Depp take his character.
As of right now, THE GRAND BUDAPEST hotel will star Johnny Depp, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe and Angela Lansbury. This is another original script from Wes Anderson, so we don’t know anything about the plot just yet, but I’m curious if it will tie in at all to THE DARJEELING LIMITED (which I consider Anderson’s most underrated film) in any way. Maybe I’m just making the connection with the names, . It’s true that Wes Anderson likes to use the same actors in his films, but both Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody starred in THE DARJEELING LIMITED, so it’s quite possible it could pay homage to the film in some way. Either way, Johnny Depp as a leading man in a Wes Anderson film is exciting, just for the possibilities alone. (Deadline)
