Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to direct and star in Sandman

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Don Jon

I’m not personally familiar with the comic series SANDMAN, but I know people who are and I know how passionate they are about Neil Gaiman’s work.  And I know how much everyone loves Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so the word that he’s in talks with Warner Bros. to direct and star in the fantasy adaptation should come as exciting news.  Supposedly, he’s in final talks to direct the film with help from David Goyer.  As an actor, no one should question Gordon-Levitt’s abilities and there aren’t many actors that would be more qualified to take on the role of Morpheus in the film.  If anything, the question might come from his directing chops since the young actor only has one feature length film, this year’s DON JON.  The film was good, but there’s a big difference between directing a small scale romantic comedy to directing a high concept fantasy-horror.  But Joseph Gordon-Levitt is insanely talented and Goyer has plenty of experience in the genre, so I’m sure they’ll make a good team. The official Amazon synopsis of ‘The Sandman Omnibus Vol. 1′: The Sandman is the universally lauded masterwork following Morpheus, Lord of the Dreaming–a vast hallucinatory landscape housing all the dreams of any and everyone who’s ever existed. Regardless of cultures or historical eras, all dreamers visit Morpheus’ realm–be they gods, demons, muses, mythical creatures, or simply humans who teach Morpheus some surprising lessons.  Upon his escape from an embarrassing captivity at the hands of a mere mortal, Morpheus finds himself at a crossroads, forced to deal with the enormous changes within both himself and his realm. His journey to find his place in a world that’s drastically changed takes him through mythical worlds to retrieve his old heirlooms, the back roads of America for a twisted reunion, and even Hell itself–to receive the dubious honor of picking the next Devil. But he’ll learn his greatest lessons at the hands of his own family, the Endless, who–like him–are walking embodiments of the most influential aspects of existence.
