Joseph Gordon-Levitt might not be Batman in the Justice League movie after all

The Dark Knight Rises

Maybe it was too good to be true, but after news broke that Joseph Gordon-Levitt had reportedly signed on to play Batman in the Justice League movie, Hollywood.com is now saying they’ve talked to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s reps and that they “have refuted the rumor entirely”.  So does this mean that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is officially NOT playing Batman?  Not so fast.  Although Hollywood.com is a respected source, I don’t trust their reporting any more or less than Hitfix, which was first to break the news.  I also question the entire story from Hollywood because it’s about as non-specific as you can get.  Who are JGL’s reps that are saying this?  What aspect of the rumor are they denying; his playing Batman or his official signing?  The fact they didn’t go on record with an official statement is very telling.  My guess is that Hollywood talked to JGL’s manager and he denied everything off the record, probably because it’s not his place to make that announcement (an announcement this big would have to come from the studio) and probably because nothing has been signed yet.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Batman would require more paperwork than hiring a lesser known actor because I’m sure JGL wants to control what he signs on for.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been doing LINCOLN press for a while now, so it’s not like he’s inaccessible.  If he wanted to release a statement denying these rumors, he would have by now.  My advice on this whole thing is to take everything with a grain of salt until someone from Warner Bros. makes an official statement.  I don’t know if it will happen or not, but in the meantime, don’t give up hope that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Batman at some point.
