Did Joss Whedon ever really intend to use Quicksilver in The Avengers 2?
I’ve been called a conspiracy theorist before, but there’s a nagging idea I’ve had the past 24 hours that I just can’t shake. When it was first announced that Fox was going to be putting Quicksilver into Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, the internet blew up and immediately started theorizing what impact this would have on THE AVENGERS 2. If you recall, it was recently rumored and then confirmed that Joss Whedon would be adding the brother-sister duo Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to the heroes of THE AVENGERS 2. Fan reaction to this news was pretty bland since neither Quicksilver or Scarlett Witch are major characters in the Marvel universe.
In fact, the news was pretty strange all together since Joss Whedon had no reason to make such an early announcement. THE AVENGERS 2 isn’t hitting theaters for another couple of years and he hasn’t even finalized the script or the casting yet. So why even let it slip that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would be making an appearance? Here’s where things get a little complicated. Marvel and Fox share rights to the Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch characters. But Marvel can only refer to them by their real names, Pietro and Wanda. The reason is to avoid confusion should Fox ever decide to use them in an X-Men movie. It should be noted that Fox can use the Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch names and Marvel cannot.
It’s easy to look at this and say that Fox just slapped Marvel in the face by casting Evan Peters as Quicksilver so late in the filming of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, mainly because that’s exactly what Fox did. Animosity between the Fox and Marvel seems to have been brewing for a while and this was Fox’s way of laying claim to Quicksilver while at the same time punking Marvel…or so they thought. My theory is that Joss Whedon never intended to bring Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into The Avengers. THE AVENGERS films are huge blockbusters that can launch standalone films on any character that shows up. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are interesting characters, but they’re not going to get their own film. Joss Whedon HAS to add a new character and you can bet that the new character will be someone that can stand along side the already established Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk. Sure, he could add Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and another character, but Joss Whedon is smart enough not to turn THE AVENGERS 2 into a movie lineup of comic book characters. It should be noted that the same can’t be said for Bryan Singer, who apparently has no problem throwing in 15 or more superheroes into X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.
I believe that Joss Whedon said Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to not only throw off crazed fanboys, but to egg Fox into a false dig. He’s not trying to sabotage the next X-Men film, but I’m betting the creative team over at Marvel all had a huge laugh when the Quicksilver casting was announced. My guess is that the next Avengers film will feature a couple of very strong new characters, like Power Man, Luke Cage, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant Man or maybe he’ll add in one of Marvel’s recent acquisitions like Daredevil, The Punisher or Ghost Rider (although I don’t think they were ever originally in The Avengers). Whomever Joss Whedon chooses, I don’t think he ever intended to use Quicksilver or Scarlet Witch.
