Kate Winslet joins Shailene Woodley in Divergent
Kate Winslet isn’t the name I would ever associate with a movie billed as “the next Twilight” and in fact, Kate Winslet really hasn’t done a big budget, mainstream (unless you count this weekend’s MOVIE 43 as mainstream) movie since 1997’s TITANIC, which granted is one of the biggest movies of all time. But apparently, she sees something she likes in the young adult adaptation, DIVERGENT. THE DESCENDENTS star Shailene Woodley was cast in the film back in October and the filmmakers have been actively searching for a male lead ever since, with names like Alex Pettyfer and Jeremy Irvine being tossed around.
The original novel was written by Veronica Roth and is about a future where people are separated by what kind of traits they have. SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN scribe Evan Daughtery wrote the first script, which was rewritten by HOPE SPRINGS author Vanessa Taylor. Neil Burger (LIMITLESS) will be handling directing duties for Lionsgate. I’m not familiar enough with DIVERGENT to know what role Kate Winslet would be playing, but I would guess it’s either going to be Woodley’s mother or a villain of some sort.
