Keira Knightley has replaced Scarlett Johansson in Can A Song Save Your Life?
Looks like the upcoming romantic musical from director John Carney (ONCE) has had a little casting change the last couple of days. Originally Scarlett Johansson was set to play the female lead opposite her THE AVENGERS co-star Mark Ruffalo, but she has left (most likely due to scheduling changes) and has been replaced by the svelte British actress Keira Knightley. Too bad we won’t be able to see Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson re-team on the film, but having Keira Knightley step in as a replacement is still pretty awesome.
CAN A SONG SAVE YOUR LIFE? follows a singer (Keira Knightley) who moves to New York City and is promptly dumped by her boyfriend. While singing at local bars the singer is discovered by a down-on-his-luck record producer (Mark Ruffalo) who is, of course, intent on making her a star as well as his girlfriend. Since this is a musical, I’m sure there will be a lot of singing but I’m not so sure those will be paired with dancing, though that would be fantastic but most likely inappropriate. Hailee Steinfeld (TRUE GRIT) is also on board and will be portraying the role of Mark Ruffalo’s daughter. Shooting for CAN A SONG SAVE YOUR LIFE? is set to start sometime this summer in New York City with a release most likely sometime next year.
I think this will be a great role for Keira Knightley, if only to get her out of her minor box office slump. Keira Knightley has had a string of decent films, but nothing huge like her stint in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise. One of Keira Knightley’s best performances was in A DANGEROUS METHOD from last year as well as NEVER LET ME GO in 2010. I have to give her props for taking on more indie films, but I’m ready to see Keira Knightley back in some box office hits. (Screen Daily)
