Kristen Bell will star in a Veronica Mars film, thanks to Kickstarter
Now this is a trend I’d like to see continue. ‘Veronica Mars’ only lasted three seasons, but it amassed a huge fan base that have been clamoring for a movie ever since the series ended. Star Kristen Bell has remained a supporter of the series, but Warner Bros. (who own the rights) have been reluctant to greenlight a feature film, fearing they’d pony up the money and no one would show up to see the film. Well, series creator Rob Thomas (not the lead singer of Matchbox 20) pitched an idea for a ‘Veronica Mars’ movie to WB and they basically said that if he can generate $2 million through a Kickstarter campaign within 30 days, that they’d cover the marketing, promotion and distribution of the film.
Well, the Kickstarter campaign went live this morning and within 12 hours, they had over $2 million, making it the most successful Kickstarter campaign ever. Per the rules of Kickstarter, WB has to uphold their end of the bargain, meaning filming should start later this fall with a release in early 2014. Chances are good the movie will only have a limited theatrical run, but this is incredible news for fans of the show. The project is still going strong, so if you want to get in on the action, head over to the Veronica Mars Movie Project at Kickstarter.
