Lily Collins to star in Mortal Instruments for director Harald Zwart

March 16, 2012 | Written By: Brad Sturdivant

Lily Collins

I was probably one of the few people that wasn’t impressed with THE BLIND SIDE.  Maybe it was the overly sentimental tone of the film or maybe it was Sandra Bullock’s blonde hair, but I felt it was a bit overrated.  But I remember when it was done, I thought Lily Collins did a good job in the film and I made a mental note to keep an eye on her career.  Of course, everyone saw what I saw and Lily Collins has been attached to numerous projects since then and followed up THE BLIND SIDE with the horrible PRIEST, and then again with the embarrassingly bad ABDUCTION.  So it may be too early to say Lily Collins is going to be the next big actress.  But she does have MIRROR MIRROR on the way (although that looks pretty bad) as well as THE ENGLISH TEACHER, with Julianne Moore, WRITERS and ROSALINE.

Today, Lily Collins is adding to her rising star resume by returning to the long in the works MORTAL INSTRUMENTS for director Harald Zwart, who previously directed the remake of THE KARATE KID.  The film will be based off the series of young adult novels by Cassandra Clare, which follow Clary Fray (Lily Collins), an ordinary teenager that learns she’s a descendant of a line of Shadowhunters.  Shadowhunters are a secret group of angel-like warriors that protect our world from demons.  After Clary’s mother disappears, she joins the Shadowhunters and gets wrapped up in their alternate world of demons and other supernatural creatures.  I haven’t read the books, but it sounds like a darker twist on the Percy Jackson series.

This feels a bit too teeny-bopper for Lily Collins, but I guess she’s only 23 years old right now (make sure you wish Lily Collins a happy birthday on March 18th) and can still get away with these types of films.  No word yet on when this will start. (Constantin Film)
