Limitless beats out The Lincoln Lawyer and Paul at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Even though we had three intriguing movies open up this weekend, the overall box office numbers were kind of soft compared to expectations.  I’m assuming that people were either out celebrating St. Patrick’s Day or watching some great NCAA basketball rather than going to the theaters.  So although LIMITLESS, PAUL and THE LINCOLN LAWYER failed to impress at the box office, I’m betting all three films will clean up on Blu-ray.  But the #1 movie this weekend was Bradley Cooper’s LIMITLESS.  This was a big time role for Cooper and was his chance to prove to Hollywood that he could carry and open his own film.  A $19 million opening isn’t going to wow anyone, but his film was #1.  Unfortunately, the Groupon ticket scandal (where they basically gave away tickets) didn’t work very well for Lionsgate as THE LINCOLN LAWYER only managed a fourth place opening, narrowly beating PAUL.

Next week, we have the opening of SUCKER PUNCH and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES.  I’m very curious to see how SUCKER PUNCH opens considering how ill received the movie has been in early previews.  But Warner Brothers is advertising the heck out of it, so it may pay off for them.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper in Limitless

1. Limitless $19m

2. Rango $15.5m

3. Battle: LA $14.5m

4. The Lincoln Lawyer $13.6m

5. Paul $13.2m

6. Red Riding Hood $7.3m

7. The Adjustment Bureau $5.9m

8. Mars Needs Moms $5.2m

9. Beastly $3.2m

10. Hall Pass $2.7m
