Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Life of Pi lead a surprising list of the 2013 Oscar nominations
Love ’em or hate ’em, the Academy Awards are a big deal to just about every movie fan. The 85th Annual Academy Awards will air on February 24th and based off this list of nominees, I’m sure the winners will spark some controversy. Leading the way this year was Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN, which racked up an amazing 12 nominations. But the biggest surprise has to be LIFE OF PI, which got snubbed from most best-of lists and managed to pick up 11 nominations. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK also did well, picking up 8 nominations, followed by ARGO and LES MISERABLES.
For the most part, the list of Best Pictures is not surprising, with LINCOLN, LESMISERABLES and ZERO DARK THIRTY all picking up nominations as expected. But you don’t have to go very far to find a surprise, most notably in the Best Director category, with snubs for Ben Affleck (ARGO) and Kathryn Bigelow (ZERO DARK THIRTY). Surprisingly, Benh Zeitlin and Micahel Haneke took home nominations for AMOUR and BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD respectively. As you probably know, the film that wins Best Director almost always wins Best Picture. Obviously, we’ll have a lot more Oscar coverage in the coming days and weeks, including a list of the biggest snubs and our predictions.
