Little Fockers beats True Grit to take the holiday box office

I’d like to say that there should be some sort of lesson learned somewhere in this weekend’s box office results, but pointing out that a tired sequel and a half-hearted comedy can’t perform to expectations while a clever, well made Western surprises is not going to be heard by anyone in Hollywood. It’s nice to see TRUE GRIT get some love from general audiences. But can anyone really be surprised by the disappointing box office returns for LITTLE FOCKERS or GULLIVER’S TRAVELS? The previews were absolutely horrible. It’s surprising that people are calling this third film a “franchise killer” for Fockers, only because it should have never been a franchise to begin with. MEET THE FOCKERS was a pitiful movie and it doesn’t seem like this one was any better. As for Gulliver, no surprise there either as this film never seemed like a good idea.
With so many limited releases and with studios avoiding releasing movies on Christmas day, this year just felt like a letdown in terms of Christmas season movies. Next week sees…well, not much. BLUE VALENTINE gets a wide release, but it obviously won’t compete for any box office accolades, so it’s probably going to come down to TRUE GRIT or LITTLE FOCKERS again. The numbers below are for the 3 day weekend.
1. Little Fockers $34m
2. Tron Legacy $23m
3. True Grit $21.5m
4. Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader $16m
5. Yogi Bear $10.5m
6. Tangled $9.5m
7. The Fighter $8.5m
8. Black Swan $7.5m
9. The Tourist $4.8m
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 $4.2m
