Mad Max: Fury Road named best film of the year by Kansas City Film Critics Circle

The Kansas City Film Critics Circle gathered for their 50th annual James Loutzenhiser Awards Sunday, December 20. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was the big winner for 2015, taking home Best Picture, Best Director for George Miller, and Best Actress for Charlize Theron. The second oldest critics group in the country spread the love around with different films winning in all the other categories.

As a voting member of the KCFCC, I’m ecstatic for the films our critics circle have chosen. With our open and engaging voting block, we get a chance to see just how close the competition is among us. SICARIO had the most nominations but was unable to secure a win, finishing a close second in the Best Picture category.  Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in THE REVENANT beat out Michael Fassbender in STEVE JOBS in the Best Actor race. Tom Hardy in THE REVENANT took a close second to Michael Shannon’s performance in 99 HOMES for Best Supporting Actor.  Alicia Vikander had many great performances this past year but the KCFCC chose to give her the Best Supporting Actress Award for her work in the original and inventive, EX MACHINA. The film also received the honor of our Vince Koehler Award for Best Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror Film.  INSIDE OUT won for Best Animated Feature and had a strong showing for Best Original Screenplay, but was ultimately beat out by SPOTLIGHT. It was a tight race between two films in the Best Adapted Screenplay category with THE BIG SHORT narrowly beating out STEVE JOBS.
