Martin Freeman discusses the lack of pressure playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit

Playing a beloved character from a very beloved book series might be rather intimidating, especially if it’s Bilbo Baggins. However, Martin Freeman does not feel any sort of pressure playing the iconic character in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.
When asked if he felt a burden playing the part, Freeman responded with, “I honestly don’t feel that pressure, no. I really, really don’t. Of course, it is Bilbo’s journey, but I didn’t write it. I’m not directing it… It’s not my film. It’s Peter’s film.” But when he thought that he may not get to do the film because of his schedule on the series, SHERLOCK, Freeman knew he would be displeased with any other actor that took on the role.
The only things that currently bother him about filming are being covered with snot/mud and the lack of seriousness in tone. Freeman says that the film so far is more comedic if anything. Jackson has assured the actor that the heavy stuff is coming.
