Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio eyeing a remake of The Gambler

The dynamic duo of director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio (GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE AVIATOR, THE DEPARTED, SHUTTER ISLAND) are set to strike again with the remake of the 1974 film THE GAMBLER. The film was originally directed by Karel Reisz and starred James Caan. The film is about a professor that can’t control his gambling addiction and ends up spiraling downward and even swindles money from his mother and convinces a student to shave points off a basketball game.
Scorsese is no stranger to remakes and whenever there’s news of him and Leo teaming up, no one should be surprised, but I can’t say that this film peeks my interest. It seems it would be a good chance for Leo to showcase some acting chops, but the story of a degenerate gambler that ruins his family feels like something we’ve seen before. There are still a lot of details to work out and both guys have a lot of films on their plates at this point. Leonardo DiCaprio is currently in Australia, filming the remake of THE GREAT GATSBY with Baz Luhrman.
