Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to make a Whitey Bulger biopic for Warner Bros.

Count me as one of the fans that’s eagerly anticipating seeing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck back on the big screen together. I recently re-watched GOOD WILL HUNTING and was reminded what a great film that is and how good Damon and Affleck are together. But also count me as part of the crowd that has been jaded and teased too often with news that the two are going to reteam. They had a legal courtroom drama that they were supposed to do several years ago, but that fell through. Then they had the baseball scandal film THE TRADE that seems to be stuck in legal woes and now Damon reveals to GQ that he and Affleck are going to make a biopic on famed Boston mobster Whitey Bulger. Whitey was a notorious criminal and was just recently apprehended in California. There are a few Whitey Bulger films in the works, but Damon is hoping the star power that he and Affleck bring to the table will deter any other studio from moving forward. Speaking about the project, Damon said:
“We’re doing a Whitey Bulger movie, Warner’s got it for us. If it’s a straight biopic, we’ll do it over a period of time. But it’s always a question of what part of the story do you tell, and biopics are always a little cumbersome, so do we find another way in? We’re still figuring it out. There are a couple of competing movies and I don’t think it’s been announced yet that we’re doing it, but the sooner it’s announced the better, just because everyone else will back off, hopefully. I’m really excited about it.”
So, I guess we’ll see what role he and Affleck will play (if any, Affleck may just direct the film) and how soon it will come to theaters.
