Matt Damon might get small for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing
Alexander Payne is a director I respect, but I’m not sure I’ve actually enjoyed any of his films. SIDEWAYS and ABOUT SCHMIDT received plenty of critical praise, but neither appealed to me and I find that outside of the usual critics circles, his films tend to be met with a cold reception. That said, the guy has a knack for highlighting human emotions and if he can finally get his next project off the ground, I think it will be a success. If everything comes together, the film will star Matt Damon, who has apparently agreed to star in the film. For a while, Paul Giamatti, Reese Witherspoon and Sacha Baron Cohn were attached as well, but with the inclusion of Matt Damon, my guess is all of the casting will start over.
For years, Payne has been trying to get DOWNSIZING made. The film is about a married couple that realizes their lives have gotten out of hand and too stressful and agree to let themselves be shrunk down. But at the last second, the wife backs out. That brief little synopsis makes me giggle, so I really hope Payne can realize the premise’s potential. Of course, he’ll have to navigate away from HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS memories, but overall I’m excited for this one. (Deadline)
