Megamind dominates weekend while Due Date finishes second at the box office

You can’t be surprised any time an animated movie does well at the box office. Even though MEGAMIND was ill-received by critics, the fact remains there’s no competition on the animated front this weekend and so all the little kids out there made a trek to the theater to check it out. So DUE DATE was the question mark, but even that had Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis, so it was bound to do pretty well. But the biggest story of the weekend was Tyler Perry’s controversial FOR COLORED GIRLS, which did incredibly strong with just over $20 million. This was a strong move for Perry, who managed to achieve box office success without dressing in drag.
Next week sees the thousandth (or seemingly so) collaboration between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington in UNSTOPPABLE and the somewhat cheesy looking SKYLINE, along with Harrison Ford returning to comedy in MORNING GLORY. I wouldn’t rule out MEGAMIND to continue it’s run, only because kids need their animated fix.
