Mel Gibson is looking to direct Hacksaw Ridge with Andrew Garfield
I’ve been a staunch advocate for getting Mel Gibson back in the Hollywood spotlight and despite my best wishes, Gibson has been stuck on the outside looking in for several years now. He’s popped up in movies like MACHETE KILLS and EXPENDABLES 3, but nothing even close to what he’s capable of. But today we might have some good news as it looks like Gibson is gearing up to get behind the camera again, this time for the WWII pic, HACKSAW RIDGE. And if everything goes well, he’ll have Andrew Garfield in the lead role.
I know we’re all sick of WWII pics, but this one actually sounds fascinating. It tells the story of Desmond Doss, who has the distinction of being the only conscientious objector to receive a Congressional Medal Of Honor. He ended up saving over 70 soldiers at the battle of Okinawa…completely unarmed. It’s quite an interesting story, but one that needs to be handled with care and the idea of Mel Gibson directing it is almost too good to be true. Hopefully this will all come to fruition and maybe, just maybe, Mel Gibson can get that epic Viking film he’s been working on actually made. (THR)
