Mel Gibson stars in the Get the Gringo trailer, will bypass theaters and debut on DirecTV
Remember reading about the film HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION in which Mel Gibson played a criminal that gets stuck in a Mexican prison and then gets out with the help of a 10 year-old boy? Well, the Adrian Grunberg directed film is now called GET THE GRINGO and although it was seemingly originally designed to be more of a drama, it appears it’s going to be an all out action film, right in line with some of the best we’ve gotten from Mel Gibson. The trailer is full of action and witty one-liners, everything we’ve come to expect from Mel.
But perhaps the bigger news is that GET THE GRINGO isn’t going to have a theatrical release. Instead, Deadline reports that it’s going to premiere on DirecTV on May 1st for $10.99 and then on Blu-ray later in 2012. Some might point to Mel’s recent struggles as the reason for him bypassing theaters, but Mel has always marched to the beat of his own drum and after the success of APOCOLYPTO and PASSION OF THE CHRIST, I’d be inclined to bet on Mel when it comes to the gambles he takes in marketing his films. Either way, check out the trailer below and find someone with DirecTV so you can check it out on May 1st.
