Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham star in the first Spy trailer

I’m a fan of Melissa McCarthy and I get a kick out of her movies, but I can’t say I’m impressed with the first trailer for SPY.  The problem is that it feels like every normal guy/gal turned spy comedy we’ve seen so many times before.  McCarthy does her usual schtick in the first trailer, but I didn’t see anything that made feel like I had to see it.  But I don’t think that has much to do with McCarthy and instead, I put the blame on Paul Feig, who has a knack for taking the obvious jokes and hoping his stars can carry the funny.  But don’t take my word for it; check out the first trailer below and see what you think.

The official synopsis for SPY: Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.  SPY stars Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Miranda Hart, and Jude Law.  The Paul Feig directed film hits theaters on May 22nd, 2015.
