Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in the first MACBETH trailer

Even with one of the great actors of our generation leading the film, I just can’t help but feel like I’m doing homework every time I watch a Shakespeare adaptation. Although I’ll admit that the latest adaptation of MACBETH might change my mind. The first trailer for the film has hit and it looks like an impressive production all around, led by the great Michael Fassbender. The wild card in the mix is first time director Justin Kurzel, but with Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the leads, he’s managed to put his first feature in good hands. Check out the first trailer below.

The official synopsis of the original MACBETH play by William Shakespeare: One of the great Shakespearean tragedies, Macbeth is a dark and bloody drama of ambition, murder, guilt, and revenge. Prompted by the prophecies of three mysterious witches and goaded by his ambitious wife, the Scottish thane Macbeth murders Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to succeed him on the throne. This foul deed soon entangles the conscience-stricken nobleman in a web of treachery, deceit, and more murders, which ultimately spells his doom. Set amid the gloomy castles and lonely heaths of medieval Scotland, Macbeth paints a striking dramatic portrait of a man of honor and integrity destroyed by a fatal character flaw and the tortures of a guilty imagination. MACBETH stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, David Thewlis, Elizabeth Debicki, Jack Reynor, Sean Harris, Paddy Considine and David Hayman. The Justin Kurzel directed film doesn’t have a US release date yet, but if it’s well received by test screenings, expect an Oscar push later this year.
