New Year's Eve beats out The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 at the weekend box office

Hollywood executives still seem to be puzzled by the lackluster box office takes the past several months, but the average moviegoer knows that as long as Hollywood keeps churning out drivel like NEW YEAR’S EVE, the box office numbers are going to be disappointing. But even though it was a shameless attempt to put recognizable faces in a cheap romantic comedy to sell tickets, NEW YEAR’S EVE did manage to rake in almost $14 million, which was good enough to beat out THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 1, which was in its fourth week. THE SITTER actually took the second spot, so apparently Jonah Hill isn’t the box office draw we all thought he was.
Next week should easily belong to SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS. Horrible title or not, the film looks fun and should be a worthy follow-up to the fun original. Plus, Robert Downey Jr. at the top of his game is always a good time. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. New Year’s Eve $13.8m
2. The Sitter $10m
3. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 $8m
4. The Muppets $7.2m
5. Arthur Saves Christmas $6.5m
6. Hugo $6m
7. The Descendants $4.6m
8. Happy Feet 2 $3.1m
9. Jack and Jill $3m
10. Tower Heist $2.5m
