No Strings Attached surprises at the box office while The Green Hornet finishes strong

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

It looks like NO STRINGS ATTACHED is going to pull in close to $20 million this weekend and finish in the top spot at the box office and even though there isn’t much competition, I’m surprised.  But more than surprised, I’m scared.  I’m scared because Hollywood executives are traditionally shortsighted and I know they’re going to use this as proof Ashton Kutcher can open his own movie and is a good romantic lead.  Of course, anyone that has ever seen him in a movie knows that’s not the case, but I don’t think any of that will matter.  I think the real reason for this film’s success rests on the fact there aren’t any other rom-coms out there and the fact that Natalie Portman is at an all time high given her BLACK SWAN success.

The feel-good success of the year so far is THE GREEN HORNET, which managed to finish a close second and retain about 50% of its audience from last week.  The only other film to open this week was THE COMPANY MEN, which didn’t even manage a top ten finish.  But I think that’s mainly because most people thought this had already come out.  Next week sees the release of Jason Statham’s latest, THE MECHANIC, which will probably be good for a few action scenes and not much else.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher in No Strings Attached

1. No Strings Attached $20m

2. The Green Hornet $17m

3. The Dilemma $10m

4. The King’s Speech $8.5m

5. True Grit $8m

6. Black Swan $5.7m

7. Little Fockers $4m

8. The Fighter $4m

9. Tron: Legacy $3.5m

10. Yogi Bear $3.5m
