Puss In Boots takes the weekend box office while In Time and The Rum Diary struggle

Cartoons always do well.  But I’m actually a little surprised that Dreamworks Animation’s Shrek spinoff PUSS IN BOOTS didn’t do even better than the $33 million it looks like it’s going to finish with.  I thought the previews for the film were great and as the sequels progressed, Puss was the only character watchable in the Shrek movies.  But the film will clean up when it hits Blu-ray.  The other new movies of the weekend didn’t fare as well with the Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried science fiction thriller IN TIME barely pulling in $12 million.  Part of that is the fact Timberlake is not yet a movie star and the other part is that science fiction films can struggle at the box office.  Then there’s Johnny Depp’s RUM DIARY, which couldn’t even crack $10 million.  Face it Depp fans; without Sparrow, Depp can’t open a movie.

Next week we have the release of A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR CHRISTMAS and TOWER HEIST.  I enjoy the Harold and Kumar movies, so that should be a good time, but TOWER HEIST looks horrible.  I don’t expect either film to knock Puss In Boots out of the top spot.  Note: the snowstorm on the East Coast has delayed some of these numbers, so the exact numbers will be updated as they become final.
