Rashida Jones joins Steve Martin and Owen Wilson in The Big Year

The upcoming comedy THE BIG YEAR is assimilating one heck of a great cast.  In lead roles, it already has Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson as three bird watchers that get into a heated rivalry with each other during a North American competition.  But in supporting roles, it has JoBeth Williams, Anthony Anderson, Tim Blake Nelson, Kevin Pollack, Dianne Wiest, Brian Dennehy, Rosamund Pike and Joel McHale.  If that wasn’t enough, today Rashida Jones, Angelica Huston and Jim Parsons joined the cast as well.

With this many players and a somewhat difficult plot (this is based on the book ‘The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession’ by Mark Obmasicik), I think director David Frankel has his work cut out for him.  The idea of a bird-watching competition isn’t going to appeal to many people and then adding in the symbolism to where each person is in life could be tough to pull off.  However, I’m under the impression that any non-Pink Panther movie with Steve Martin is a good one, so I have high hopes for it.
