Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D beats out Takers at the Box Office
Posted by: Brad Sturdivant
I have to confess that I’ve never seen any of the RESIDENT EVIL movies. Most of them just never seemed appealing to me, but I will say that the new RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE 3D looked like a fun trip, at least from the trailers. So it’s no surprise the film was number one at the box office, especially after securing almost every 3D screen available and given the fact it was actually shot in 3D and not converted. For those keeping track at home, this is by far the most successful of the RESIDENT EVIL films. It didn’t really have much competition, with last weeks TAKERS and THE AMERICAN not even putting up a fight.
Next week sees the release of DEVIL, which apparently is only noteworthy because it’s “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan”. If it was 2001, that might be really appealing, but it audiences use Shyamalan as more of a punchline these days than a source of good movies. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see RESIDENT EVIL hold on to the top spot for a little while longer. Note: The box office numbers below are estimates and will be updated as final numbers come in.
1. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D $28 million
2. Takers $5.9 million
3. The American $5.8 million
4. Machete $4.2 million
5. Going the Distance $3.8 million
6. The Other Guys $3.7 million
7. The Last Exorcism $3.5 million
8. The Expendables $3.3 million
9. Eat Pray Love $3 million
10. Inception $2.9 million
