Django Unchained Review, Synopsis, Plot: Taking place in a pre-Civil War South, Quentin Tarantino brings you DJANGO UNCHAINED. The film stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave who is offered his freedom by bounty hunter King Schultz, played by Chrstoph Waltz (who won the Academy Award for his starring role in Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS). Schultz is hot on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers and needs Django’s help to catch them. In return, Schultz will not only give Django his freedom, but will also help him exact revenge on the cruel slave owner that has brought misery to Django’s family. Their success leads to Django’s freedom, but rather than going his own way, he and Schultz team up to go after the South’s most sought after criminals. Django forms a valuable alliance with Schultz while focused on finding and saving his beloved wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).

Their quest leads them to Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, the owner of a notoriously cruel plantation where slaves are trained to fight each other for sport. Although they confront Candie under false pretenses, their true intentions are eventually revealed, forcing Django and Schultz to decide how far they’ll go to escape with Broomhilda and what they’re willing to sacrifice.

The film has moved at a pace only Quentin Tarantino can manage, but hit a hiccup with the initial casting. Originally, Will Smith (Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner were also attached at some point, albeit for different roles) was being pursued to take the role but eventually dropped out for unspecified reasons. Most people assumed it was because he didn’t want to take such a controversial role, leading some fans to wonder just how far Quentin Tarantino will take it. Tarantino has been accused of having racist undertones in his films before and some people are curious to see how he’ll handle a subject as sensitive as slavery. Although everyone wants to read political motivations in movies, Quentin Tarantino seems like a guy that just wants to make the best movie possible. Given his track record of films like RESERVOIR DOGS, PULP FICTION, JACKIE BROWN, KILL BILL and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (not to mention writing TRUE ROMANCE), the guy has proven himself to be one of the most talented and consistent directors working today. Of course, we need to see the film before we can write a DJANGO UNCHAINED film review, but something tells me it will be a worthy addition to Tarantino’s other films.
