The Last Stand (2013) Review, Synopsis, Plot: After 10 years without a leading role, Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to the silver screen in THE LAST STAND. Slated for a January 2013 release, THE LAST STAND is also the American film (and English-language) debut of director Jee-woon Kim (I SAW THE DEVIL, 2010 and THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD, 2008). Schwarzenegger stars as Sheriff Ray Owens, a former LAPD officer who left the force after a failed operation that left his partner crippled. Wracked with guilt and insecurity, Owens became sheriff of the quieter border town of Sommerton Junction, where life slowed.

When the head of a notorious Mexican drug cartel (played by Eduardo Noriega, who was spectacular in ABRE LOS OJOS) escapes from the FBI, he heads for the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted vehicle. Law Enforcement agencies swarm the small town to stop the criminal from breaking through the border and disappearing. As Owens tries to decide his role in the upcoming fight, he also has to deal with personal drama and an increasing doubt in his (or his force’s) ability to handle the situation. Rival law enforcement agencies are also questioning his and his force’s abilities. But after searching inward and outward for help, Ownes knows that the only thing to do is prepare for the inevitable showdown. Early word is that the grand finale of the film is one of the biggest shootout spectacles in recent memory.
Rounding out the cast are Forest Whitaker (THE SHIELD and CRIMINAL MINDS), Luis Guzman (BOOGIE NIGHTS), Eduardo Noriega (TRANSIBBEREAN), Peter Stormare (LOCKOUT, FARGO), and Harry Dean Stanton (THE GREEN MILE). The cast is intriguing but as the first starring role for Schwarzenegger it is a risky proposition. He’s likely hoping to be embraced the same way his EXPENDABLES 2 costar Sylvester Stallone was for his surprisingly deep turn in Martin Scorsese’s COPLAND. But Stallone didn’t have the intense personal issues that have permeated Schwarzenegger’s post-Hollywood life (which also happen to closely mirror those of his role). Whether audiences will be able to embrace Arnold for anything outside of straight-up action remains to be seen; regardless, THE LAST STAND looks like an interesting genre-bending foray for all involved and it will be exciting to write about Schwarzenegger with THE LAST STAND 2013 film review rather than writing about his political and personal activities. Something just feels right about seeing Arnold back on the big screen again.

Predator was definitely Arnie's first really good movie, but Terminator 2 is still one of the best action movies of all time. What's hilarious is that Arnie's English hasn't improved after all these years! I'll check out The Last Stand for sure, because you never know when your last chance to see the big Austrian on the big screen. Unless they start doing re-runs. After I've seen it I'll come back in here and give my full Last Stand Movie Review!
Love the infographic! I had forgotten how many great lines Auhnuld has had over the years.

Arnie back where he belongs! I think this movie will be a bit of an unknown... we haven't seen Schwarzenegger do anything for years (and that includes governing California!) and I haven't seen anything from this director before. I haven't heard how long this movie will be, but I can't imagine it being more than 90 minutes or so. Undoubtedly the kind of movie where you can probably just leave your brain at home and go for some good old-fashioned fun at the cinema. It will be predictable, action-packed, and probably a lot of fun if you don't think too much. Johnny Knoxville should be good for some laughs. Can't wait for some classic Arnie stone-cold one-liners!
Yeah, I'm definitely very stoked about seeing Arnold back on the big screen. He's been one of my favorite action-type heroes since I was a little kid
