This is 40 Film Review, Synopsis, Plot: Taking place a few years after 2007′s KNOCKED UP, THIS IS 40 is a sequel… of sorts. This time following Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) focusing on their family life as they hit their midlife stride at the age of 40. You might remember the characters as supporting roles in the hit comedy featuring Katherine Hegl and Seth Rogen as two young twenty somethings who have a one night stand that leads to pregnancy. Alison (Heigl) lives with her sister Debbie, brother in-law Pete and their two children played by writer/director Judd Apatow’s real life daughters, Maude Apatow and Iris Apatow, who also will be reprising their roles. Along with Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd, THIS IS 40 will also feature the return of Jason (Jason Segel) the guy from KNOCKED UP who continually hits on Debbie, not deterred by her marital and motherhood status.

Sometimes writing but usually producing many of the last decades most successful comedies (ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY, SUPERBAD, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL and BRIDESMAIDS to name a few), Judd Apatow has a knack for finding humor in just about every situation. Despite being such a well-known name, Apatow has only directed four feature films – 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN (His best work), KNOCKED UP, FUNNY PEOPLE and now THIS IS 40. All of which, have starring roles for his real life wife Leslie Mann. Although Judd Apatow has continued to find crazy success producing comedies, his last directorial effort was FUNNY PEOPLE, which was not only poorly done, but was extremely uneven, marking a giant step backwards for Apatow the director. Hopefully, by returning to the characters created in KNOCKED UP, Apatow can find his stride and deliver another great film like THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN or KNOCKED UP.
Although you can’t do a full THIS IS 40 review without seeing the whole film, if the trailer is any indication, the film will have trouble blending drama and comedy, which was the downfall for FUNNY PEOPLE. That being said, the act of turning 40 and reevaluating ones life is ripe with comedic opportunities, so Apatow has plenty of material available to him. That, and the great Paul Rudd as his lead and there’s reason to be hopeful for that the film will be enjoyable. But I can’t help but think the film would be better with a surprise cameo from Seth Rogen, who can make anything seem funny.

Good content, great site. I'm looking forward to seeing what Apatow will do with these characters.
