Zero Dark Thirty Film Review, Synopsis, Plot: Hot off their success with the Oscar winning THE HURT LOCKER, director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal are back in the Middle East, this time with the film ZERO DARK THIRTY. The film chronicles the assassination of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011 and the elite task force (Navy SEAL Team 6) that was responsible for the mission. The pressure is on this time for Bigelow and Boal, since the event they’re working with only happened a couple years ago and was arguably one of the most important events of the past 10 years in world history. Movies set in modern times in the Middle East have struggled and Bigelow is really the only one to find success, but there’s a far greater challenge making a true story, especially one that everyone alive still remembers. The good news, of course, is that although we all remember the results of the event itself, no one really knows everything that went on and how exactly the assassination wet down.

So far, the film has received criticism for what it has done off the screen, most notably for the criticism President Obama has gotten for reportedly giving Katherine Bigelow unprecedented access to top secret information to help her in her research for the film. The controversy went so far as to force Sony to move the film’s release date from October to December so the film wouldn’t seem like an Obama propaganda film, just in time for the November election. But rather than inspiring audiences to vote one way or the other, I’d imagine that the holiday release date is to inspire academy members to give it some love come Oscar season. Given how many rave reviews THE HURT LOCKER received, I’d say there’s a good chance Kathryn Bigelow could find Oscar success again with ZERO DARK THIRTY.
Without a proper ZERO DARK THIRTY review, it’s hard to speculate if the film will fetch the same kind of success as THE HURT LOCKER, but with a stellar cast led by Joel Edgerton (who actually dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, but was able to return) and Jessica Chastrain, audiences should be in for a treat, just in time for the holiday season. It’s hard to tell anything from the first trailer since we don’t get to see anyone in action, but just from reading the headlines when Bin Laden was assassinated has me excited to see the events play out on the big screen.
