Rise of the Planet of the Apes tops The Change-Up at the weekend box office

I’m not sure what it is, but people just love the idea of apes taking over the world. Tim Burton’s 2001 remake of PLANET OF THE APES managed to pull in $68 million on its opening weekend and this weekend’s prequel, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, looks like it will make about $53 million. Perhaps the most telling story of the weekend is with the fourth place showing of THE CHANGE-UP, starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds. This fourth place showing is going to be analyzed and scrutinized for the next few weeks as Hollywood execs try to determine what it means, but I think it’s pretty simple. This is the second film of the summer for both of these stars and the body-switching schtick died a long time ago. This isn’t the end of R-rated comedies, it just means that making a comedy “R” and putting two likeable guys in the lead roles isn’t enough to sell tickets.
Speaking of R-rated comedies, next week sees the release of the 80 minute 30 MINUTES OR LESS, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari. By my calculations, this is the last all out R-rated comedy of the summer. We also get the opening of THE HELP, which seems like it was released months ago since they have promo screenings for it almost nightly. And of course, don’t forget about the limited release of GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE.
