Robert Downey Jr. joins Sofia Vergara in Jon Favreau's Chef
I have to admit; it’s really, really nice to do a story about Robert Downey Jr. that has nothing to do with Iron Man. Sure, I hope he comes back to the franchise just as much as the next guy, but the internet has been a little crazy lately with the will-he-or-won’t-he talk about IRON MAN 4 and THE AVENGERS 2. So consider this good news that the guy is adding a non-superhero movie to his plate, this time reteaming with his IRON MAN director Jon Favreau for the indie comedy CHEF. Not a whole lot is known about the film, only that it centers on a very emotional chef that loses his job at a Los Angeles restaurant and starts up a food truck in order to get control of his life and win back his family.
There’s no word yet on what role Robert Downey Jr. would be playing, but I hope it’s a crazy, outlandish character. I love RDJ in his straight man roles, but he’s just as good when the gloves come off and he can go crazy (think TROPIC THUNDER). Robert Downey Jr. joins a cast that already includes Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale. It’s also important not to confuse this film with the one that Bradley Cooper is trying to bring to the big screen. Cooper’s film is about a famous chef that loses his Paris restaurant and then tries to start over in London. I know, they sound similar, but they’re different. And now with Favreau taking the name first and attracting an A-lster like Robert Downey Jr., my guess is that Bradley Cooper will be renaming his film shortly. Production on Favreau’s CHEF is starting on July 8th. The timing of the announcement comes at the dawn of Cannes, where I’m sure plenty more casting announcements will be made over the next week or so. (Variety)
