Updated: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart coming at you in 3D in Twilight: Eclipse
Posted by: Brad Sturdivant
We learned late last year that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE was going to be shown on Imax screens when it’s released on June 30th. At the time, there was speculation that the film would be shown in 3D, but Summit Entertainment never confirmed and until recently had dismissed the thought. But while following up an unrelated rumor today, I asked my Summit Entertainment rep about the rumor and she (in all caps) CONFIRMED the news that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE is going to be shown in 3D. So there you have it ladies; Robert Pattinson’s pouting face and Taylor Lautner’s abs are going to be close enough to touch this summer.
This falls on the heels of the 2D to 3D debate, but given the increased ticket sales for 3D films, it makes sense that Summit would cave in. Now we have to wonder if TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN will be shot in 3D.
So, is this good news, or another bad trend for Hollywood?
UPDATE: When I had the conversation with my Summit rep, I asked three times to make sure they got the news right. They repeated, emphatically, that Eclipse was going to be in 3D. Doing what every good “journalist” does, I attempted to get a second source, just to confirm. Another Summit rep (on the East Coast) confirmed the news. At that point, I ran the story.
This morning I get this email:
“Hey Brad, our Summit manager got the verbiage confused when confirming the below. Eclipse WILL be in IMAX, but it will be regular 2D, not 3D. Sorry about that—most summer movies are IMAX AND 3D, but this is in just IMAX.”
So, there you have it. The Summit rep got “IMAX” and “3D” confused. Eclipse will NOT be in 3D. I sincerely apologize for the confusion.
