Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart falling short of the record with Twilight: Eclipse

Although THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE was on pace to break the highest ever 4th of July weekend record, it now looks like the film will fall well short of the $180 million currently held by SPIDER-MAN 2. Of course, the film is already uber-successful, breaking the record for most screens, biggest midnight opening and biggest Wednesday opening. But I know a lot of Twi-hards were hoping for the 4th of July record, of only to give a little beat down to Spidey. After Saturday’s numbers, Eclipse has about $143 million, needing about $37 more million in two days to best Spidey. Although not impossible, insiders are “only” expecting Eclipse to take in about another $30 million, leaving it anywhere from 5-10 million short of the record.
The Fourth of July weekend is a fun number to look at, but I’m more interested to see how Eclipse holds up over several weekends. TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON dropped like a rock in its second weekend, so I’m curious if Eclipse will suffer the same fate. Of course, it doesn’t matter at this point because the film has already made a ton of cash. We’ll update later when the Sunday numbers are out.
