Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 easily takes the weekend box office
Posted by: Brad Sturdivant
The question was never really if THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 1 would be successful, but rather a question of just how successful the film was going to be. The answer is that it’s good enough for third all time in terms of single day opening records behind HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 and THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON. In terms of all time weekend numbers, it looks like it will finish at either fourth or fifth, behind Potter, THE DARK KNIGHT, SPIDER-MAN 3 and New Moon.
This is good news for some of you and others will be disappointed the franchise is still going strong, but personally, the good news of the weekend is that HAPPY FEET 2 only managed about $22 million this weekend. The first HAPPY FEET was one of the worst animated movies in recent memory and I’m still baffled as to why it was so successful. Having a good, environmentally sound message is not enough to make a film watchable.
Next week is Thanksgiving, but more importantly, it’s the release of THE MUPPETS. I can honestly say that if you’re excited for the film, you will not be disappointed. Every family in America should go see it together. Martin Scorsese’s HUGO also opens, along with the more adult oriented A DANGEROUS METHOD. I’m guessing the box office is going to boil down to a race between THE MUPPETS and Twilight. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 $139.5m
2. Happy Feet 2 $22m
3. Immortals $12.3m
4. Jack and Jill $12m
5. Puss in Boots $10.8m
6. Tower Heist $7m
7. J. Edgar $5.9m
8. Harold and Kumar A Very 3D Christmas $2.9m
9. In Time $1.6m
10. The Descendants $1.2m
